Business name: Acuity Group.

Owner: Tiffany Couch.

Address: 1603 Officers Row.

What the business does: Acuity is a forensic accounting firm, specializing in fraud investigation, litigation support (including expert witness testimony), as well as other special accounting-related matters such as internal control reviews or estate and trust disputes. In essence, owner Tiffany Couch said, her company helps businesses and individuals figure out what happened to their money.

Steps to build your business: Couch said that last year she hired two analysts, one part time and one full time. She said it was a big step for her economically but the payoffs have been priceless in terms of her ability to be responsive to clients and to have the capacity to take on more work. Couch said since Day One she has been committed to doing an excellent job, no matter how big or small the client. Her company relies on referrals, so doing a good job means they will be more likely to call next time they get a new case.

Greatest challenge: Couch said the greatest challenge is the need for her to be doing public speaking, meeting with current and prospective clients, and other marketing efforts. Her company is not like a traditional CPA firm, with the same tax-return clients year after year. Couch said it’s imperative to have a balance of continued earnings while maintaining good relationships and ensuring there is work in the pipeline.

What’s ahead: Couch is looking for another forensic accountant who can take on more of the higher level technical work. She said that will free up her time to focus on public speaking, marketing, and a new venture she is considering. It will also mean the company can take on a greater volume of work. Couch has been offered several speaking opportunities this summer that she is looking forward to, one at the Association of Certified Fraud Examiners and the other for the Indiana State Society of CPAs.

Owner’s business history: Couch worked for several accounting firms, including Moss Adams and a small boutique firm in central California. She started Acuity Group as a home-based business in April 2007. She moved to her office on Officers Row in November 2009. Early in her career she was an analyst for Boeing.
