The recent vote by Clark County commissioners to eliminate parking fees at parks, with lost revenue to be made up from the county general fund, sends a bad message.
At a time when many government agencies are being asked to come up with ways to find private partnerships to cover and make up for lost support, this move sends an opposite message.
Many cities and counties have set up enterprise funds that allow some departments to seek revenues from outside sources. These can range from signage sponsorships to concert sponsors, and trail maintenance friends groups to naming rights for parks who pay for the annual cost of these services.
By giving back the funds that had been collected from this source, Clark County Commissioner David Madore has likely caused this kind of thinking to be less likely within our government departments in the county and city.
