EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) — The New York Giants have drafted Richmond safety Cooper Taylor in the fifth round of the NFL draft.

The selection is the third on defense for New York, which finished next-to-last in the league in total defense. They took defensive tackle Johnathan Hankins of Ohio State in the second round and Texas A&M defensive end Damontre Moore in the third round.

Taylor, who is 6-foot-4, started his career at Georgia Tech and transferred to Richmond after two seasons. He played in 10 games this past season, and had 78 tackles, four interceptions, including one returned for a touchdown, and three forced fumbles and 112 sacks.

The Giants lost safety Kenny Phillips to free agency in the offseason.
