Try This: Pick up paddle, join party

The 21st annual Spring Paddle Festival offers a chance to explore Vancouver Lake by kayak and canoe, with more than 100 boats ready to try. Aimed at those looking to learn, the event includes demonstrations and discussions ranging from how to choose the right paddle to gearing up for multiday kayak trips, boat repair and paddling with kids.

When: 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. today and Sunday.

2. Nurture an idea

Do-it-yourselfers can find a bit of inspiration at the Home and Garden Idea Fair. Clark Public Utilities hosts the 22nd annual fair filled with home improvement ideas, sustainable practices information and expert presentations. There will also be a plant sale, a farmers market and demonstrations. The event includes a tie-in to Clark Public Utilities' 75th anniversary with an exhibit on the utility's history.

When: 9 a.m. to 6 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Sunday.

3. Tongue-in-cheek fun

The Va Va Voom Troupe presents "Everything Old is New Again," a take on the old-time radio programs. It will be variety show of song parodies, duets, a bit of Elvis, Cousin Minnie Pearl, clog dancing and stand-up comedy. The troupe is made up of adults who are 50 years and older.

When: 7:30 tonight and 2 p.m. Sunday.

4. A pea and a princess

The theatrical strength of Battle Ground and Prairie high schools will take on the musical made famous by Carol Burnett. "Once Upon a Mattress" is set in the medieval kingdom ruled by the devious Queen Aggravain. She refuses to let anyone marry the handsome Prince Dauntless without taking her test. Princess Winnifred must prove her "sensitivity" by sleeping on top of a pea under a pile of mattresses. The production features a cast of 32 students and a four-piece band.

5. 'The Big Wedding'

A weekend wedding celebration becomes an elaborate hoax as divorced Don and Ellie Griffin (Robert De Niro and Diane Keaton) are forced to play nice during their adopted son's (Ben Barnes) wedding, especially when his biological mother unexpectedly attends. "The Big Wedding" is rated R.
