TOKYO (AP) — Organizers of Tokyo’s bid to host the 2020 Olympics have reiterated their commitment to the IOC’s guidelines for candidate cities amid reports that Tokyo governor Naoki Inose may have violated bidding rules by commenting on Istanbul, a rival in the race to host the games.

A statement released Monday said: “Tokyo 2020 fully respects and adheres to the IOC guidelines for the candidate cities. We have the utmost respect for all candidate cities and have always taken pride in bidding in a sprit based on the Olympic values of excellence, respect and friendship.”

Inose was quoted in the New York Times last weekend appearing to claim that Istanbul is less developed and less equipped to host the games than the Japanese capital.
