STANFORD, Calif. (AP) — Stanford quarterback Josh Nunes is retiring from football after he injured his throwing arm in February and missed spring practice.
Stanford also announced Monday that fullback Geoff Meinken was not going to return for a fifth year of eligibility because a knee injury.
Nunes started nine games last season before being replaced by Kevin Hogan. He completed 52.8 percent of his passes and threw for 1,643 yards, 10 touchdowns and seven interceptions last season.
Coach David Shaw said before spring practice that Nunes suffered a “freak injury” to his right arm during a workout. Stanford’s announcement did not specify Nunes’ medical problem.
The junior was likely to be Hogan’s backup this season. Freshmen Evan Crower and Dallas Lloyd will compete for the No. 2 spot on depth chart.
