SAN DIEGO (AP) — A cross-border bid for San Diego and Tijuana, Mexico, to host the 2024 Summer Olympics appears dead before arrival.

U.S. Olympic Committee spokesman Patrick Sandusky says the city of San Diego was informed Tuesday that the International Olympic Committee charter does not allow a bid by bordering countries.

The committee’s chief executive said Friday that the San Diego-Tijuana area was among 10 to express interest in hosting. But Sandusky said committee staff later determined that IOC rules would prohibit the joint bid.

A city of San Diego spokeswoman had no immediate comment. A city of Tijuana spokesman didn’t immediately respond to a message.
