SAN DIEGO (AP) — The San Diego Padres have signed shortstop Ronny Cedeno to a minor league contract in case All-Star Everth Cabrera is suspended for 50 games by Major League Baseball as part of its investigation of the Biogenesis drug clinic.
Cedeno is scheduled to be in the lineup for Double-A Lake Elsinore on Saturday night.
Both general manager Josh Byrnes and manager Bud Black confirm the move was made in case Cabrera is suspended on Monday.
Cedeno, 30, most recently was with the Houston Astros, who designated him for assignment last Sunday.
Besides the Astros, Cedeno also has played for the Chicago Cubs, Seattle, Pittsburgh and the New York Mets.
The switch-hitting Cabrera leads the NL with 37 stolen bases. Last year, he led the NL with a career-high 44. He’s hitting .285 with four homer and 29 RBIs.
