Try This: Step up to the challenge

Waves of participants will take on the Spartan Sprint, a 4-mile course of challenging obstacles that range from giant mud pits covered with barbed wire to hurdles of flame. Spectators are invited to cheer on the athletes at the gladiator pit finish line while enjoying the festival area, music and fitness challenges. There will be Spartan Races for kids starting at noon, featuring a 1/2- and 1-mile courses.


When:
The first wave starts 8 a.m. today and Sunday.

Where: Washougal MX Park, 40205 N.E. Borin Road, Washougal.

Admission: $20 to $25 for spectators, $25 to $30 for kids races. The deadline to register for the race has passed.

The race is one of many options for getting out and about this weekend.

1. Sipping support

The fourth-annual Sip and Stroll is a self-guided tour of 35 wine and craft beer tastings at participating merchants in downtown Vancouver. There will be a free shuttle service along the route. Admission includes a commemorative glass, tastings and merchant discounts. Proceeds from the event benefit the Hough Foundation.

2. Fairest of all

The 145th-annual Clark County Fair will have a bit of something for everyone, from a watermelon-eating contest, carnival rides and games on the midway, to performances by Blue Öyster Cult at 7 p.m. tonight and singer Kip Moore at 7 p.m. Sunday at the Grandstand. FairCon and Rock U will offer visitors a blast of pop culture, with video game tournaments and rock ‘n’ roll memorabilia. Attendees can also see livestock exhibits, horse shows and 4-H and FFA competitions in the barns.

When: 10 a.m. to 11 p.m. today and 10 a.m. to 10 p.m. Sunday

Where: Clark County Fairgrounds, 17402 N.E. Delfel Road, Ridgefield.

3. A lovely lunch with friends

Participants can pack a lunch complete with blankets and chairs and join the All Church Picnic in Esther Short Park. Detour Ministries will fill the green space with a ministry fair, car shows, music and activities, including pony rides, bouncy inflatable structures and scavenger hunts.

5. Washington, Wahlberg buddy up

DEA Agent Bobby Trench (Denzel Washington) and Marucs Stigman, an NCIS agent (Mark Wahlberg), are investigating one another under for stealing money from the mob. The pair realizes they’ve been set up by the CIA in an elaborate scam. Now they must work together to return the money, find who framed them and not shoot each other in the process. “2 Guns” is rated R.
