ROCHESTER (AP) — Thurston County sheriff’s deputies say they’ve seized 14 starving horses from a farm south of Olympia, and now a charity is scrambling to find people and money to care for the animals.

The deputies served a search warrant on the farm near Rochester on Thursday. Among the horses seized was a mare nursing a foal only a few months old.

Kathy Bailey, the president of Hooved Animal Rescue of Thurston County, says the seizure nearly doubles the number of horses the charity is caring for, and it simply doesn’t have the resources to handle them all.

The group is supported solely by donations, fundraisers, and local grants and does not receive taxpayer money.
