SOUTH BEND, Ind. (AP) — Notre Dame quarterback Tommy Rees is excited about opening practice Monday knowing he will be the starter for the opening game against Temple.

Although Rees has started 18 games for the Fighting Irish over the past three seasons, the senior has never started the season opener. Rees says he’s excited about getting a second chance to be the team’s starter.

But Rees doesn’t like how he got the job. Coach Brian Kelly named Rees the starter after Everett Golson was suspended for the fall semester from school for what Golson termed poor academic judgment.

Kelly says naming Rees the starter was an easy decision because he’s a senior, has the most experience and he’s popular among his teammates.

The Irish will hold their first four days of practice in Marion, a central Indiana city about 100 miles southeast of the Notre Dame campus, starting Monday.
