CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Rex Ryan refuses to tell disappointed New York Jets fans to take their boos elsewhere.

The coach says Monday that fans “have the right to do anything they want,” including booing him or the team’s players. The subject came up because Mark Sanchez, competing with rookie Geno Smith for the starting job, was booed loudly by fans at SUNY Cortland on Saturday night when he threw an interception during the team’s scrimmage.

Antonio Cromartie, who made the interception, said Saturday he thought the reaction by fans was “bull” and added, “You don’t come out here and boo anybody.”

Ryan says he’d like to have the fans behind the team at all times, but can’t say he’s “disappointed” in the fans, who are “paying customers.”
