BLAINE — The Border Patrol has removed the chief of the sector for Western Washington, Alaska and Oregon.

The Border Patrol said Tuesday that Blaine Sector Chief Patrol Agent John C. Bates has been given a temporary duty assignment at Border Patrol headquarters. Blaine Deputy Chief Henry Rolon will assume the duties of the chief until further notice.

The Border Patrol statement gave no explanation for the move.

The Bellingham Herald reported Bates was relieved of his duties on Monday.

Bates has been with the Border Patrol since 1985 and head of the Blaine sector since 2007.
