Letter: Democrats, unions ruin Detroit

The Columbian
Published: August 5, 2013, 5:00pm

Union and Democrat rule bankrupted Detroit.

In 1950, Detroit was a booming, thriving, industrial giant with one of the highest per capita incomes in the nation and our fifth-largest city with more than 1.8 million people. Since then, the population has plummeted to about 700,000, with 98 percent of their votes going to President Barack Obama.

Unreasonable union demands drove industry to “anywhere but Detroit.” Today, unemployment is a staggering 18.6 percent compared to the 7.6 percent national average.

After 60 years of Democratic stupidity and mismanagement, Detroit has among the lowest income and education ratings. Forty percent of streetlights don’t work. Police take an hour to respond to emergencies. Because of its strict gun control laws, Detroit is the most dangerous big cities in America (FBI statistics), with a crime rate five times the national average.

Still Obama and “progressive” Democrats continue to promote the same liberal follies that bankrupted Detroit.
