CORTLAND, N.Y. (AP) — Mark Sanchez will start at quarterback over Geno Smith in the New York Jets’ preseason opener at Detroit on Friday night.

Rex Ryan says Tuesday that both quarterbacks will take snaps with the first-team offense against the Lions, but it will be Sanchez who begins under center. Ryan adds that the team hasn’t decided exactly how the playing time will be distributed.

Sanchez, entering his fifth season, and Smith, the team’s second-round pick out of West Virginia, are locked in a tight quarterback competition. The two have been rotating practice days with the starters, but Ryan said it “seemed like the natural thing to do” to start Sanchez.

Sanchez had his second straight solid day of practice, while Smith threw his first interception this summer in 11-on-11 team drills.
