MOSCOW (AP) — U.S. middle distance runner Treniere Moser is dropping out of the world championships with a strained hamstring.

Moser, who won the 1,500 meters at the nationals in June, picked up the injury at a Diamond League event in Monaco. She said she had hoped it would heal in time, but “it became clear just this week that the injury had not progressed enough to be able to perform as I, my coach and Team USA would expect. I had to make the difficult decision to scratch from the team.”

The 31-year-old Moser also has been serving as a mentor to teenager Mary Cain, who also made the team.
