COLUMBUS, Ohio (AP) — Federico Higuain converted a penalty kick and had his first goal from the run of play in more than five months and the Columbus Crew defeated New York 2-0 on Saturday.
The Crew (7-11-5) stopped a three-game losing streak as Higuain scored in the 61st minute after Chad Marshall drew a foul during a free kick. Higuain improved to 2 of 3 from the spot against the Red Bulls (11-8-5) this season. He has seven goals.
The goal came shortly after the Crew’s Matt Lampson made a fingertip save on Jonathan Steele and the second score in the 76th minute followed Lampson’s diving stop of a Fabian Espindola header.
Higuain sealed New York’s first loss in four games with a chip from 25 yards.
