MADISON, Wis. (AP) — Wisconsin coach Gary Andersen plans to hold off on announcing a starting quarterback until the season opener in two weeks.

Andersen says the race is wide open as of Saturday. The 23rd-ranked Badgers host Massachusetts on Aug. 31.

Andersen says his starting quarterback will be officially named when his picks jogs on to the Camp Randall Stadium field, though his identity may become evident in practice.

Curt Phillips looked sharp running a two-minute drill during an open portion of practice Saturday, while Joel Stave didn’t pick up a first down running the second unit.

Wisconsin also has junior college transfer Tanner McEvoy, a dual threat signal-caller, who was struggling earlier in the week.

Andersen says a scrimmage Monday will be important in creating separation at competitive spots.
