DUNCAN, Okla. (AP) — Police say an Australian man who attended an Oklahoma college on a baseball scholarship was shot to death in a random act of violence by three teenagers who were “bored.”

Duncan Police Chief Dan Ford says Christopher Lane of Melbourne was found dead Friday. Three boys, ages 15, 16 and 17, face a court appearance Tuesday.

Lane attended East Central University in Ada, about 85 miles from Duncan. The 23-year-old started 14 games at catcher last year.

Ford said Monday that the 17-year-old confessed to the killing, telling investigators “we were bored.”

The school’s baseball coach, Dino Rosato, says Lane was “an absolute joy to coach.”

Lane’s father, Peter, tells the Lawton Constitution that the family is devastated by the loss of a “sensational kid.”
