LANDOVER, Md. (AP) — The top backup to Robert Griffin III, second-year quarterback Kirk Cousins, has left the Washington Redskins’ second preseason game after injuring his right foot on a run.

Starting exhibitions while Griffin comes back from offseason knee surgery, Cousins left Monday night’s game against Pittsburgh early in the second quarter.

The Redskins said he was questionable to return.

On the second of two consecutive plays on which he ran the ball, Cousins was dragged down along the sideline by linebacker Lawrence Timmons.

Cousins immediately grabbed his right foot. He rose and walked toward the huddle with a hitch in his step, then sat down on the grass.

He was examined on the field and on the sideline, then walked to the locker room.

Rex Grossman entered to play quarterback for Washington.
