CATALDO, Idaho — The Kootenai County sheriff’s office has released the name of the pilot of an experimental aircraft who died in a weekend crash in northern Idaho.

Sheriff’s Lt. Stu Miller says the victim was 67-year-old John T. Lippis of Spokane. The coroner’s office has requested an autopsy.

The wreckage was found near a residence west of Cataldo about three hours after someone called to report seeing the plane go down. No one was at the residence at the time of the crash.

Miller says Lippis took off from the Shoshone County Airport at an unknown time Sunday afternoon for some recreational flying in the single-engine experimental aircraft.

The National Transportation Safety Board and the Federal Aviation Administration are investigating the crash.
