Vancouver-based organic grocer Chuck’s Produce & Street Market opened its second store Tuesday, showing off the new Salmon Creek venue to a morning crowd of about 100 people.
Many appeared eager to tour and shop the 43,000-square-foot store as they filed past store manager Shawn Jarrett, who welcomed the store’s first customers with warm smiles and handshakes. It took approximately one year to complete construction of the $10 million store at 2302 N.E. 117th St., at the intersection with Highway 99.
Similar to the company’s flagship store at Southeast Mill Plain Boulevard and 131st Avenue, the new Chuck’s features organic produce, local meats and packaged specialty foods. Departments include an in-store bakery and a deli and a nursery stocked with potted plants.
The new store is a wider building, but has about the same amount of space as the original Chuck’s, according to officials from the company, which is owned by Bart Colson, a partner in Vancouver-based Hawthorn Retirement Group. The company plans to expand the chain throughout the Portland-Vancouver area, and possibly head north to the Puget Sound region and south to Salem, Ore. Additional stores will resemble the company’s flagship store in east Vancouver and its new Salmon Creek venue.
The first Chuck’s store opened in 2010 in a former Joe’s sporting goods store space in east Vancouver.
