The Port of Vancouver has received two federal grants totaling about $350,000 to improve bicycle and pedestrian paths along port property on Northwest Lower River Road.

The largest grant, for $289,600, will be used to design and build a 12-foot-wide bike and pedestrian path that will begin at the convergence of Mill Plain, Fourth Plain and Lower River Road and continue about a half-mile west to the port’s administrative building. Construction will begin next February.

The second grant will be used to design a 1,750-foot section of pathway to connect an existing 2,700-foot path between the port’s administrative building and Gateway Avenue to the west. The existing path was completed in March.

The port’s long-term plan is to construct about 3.7 miles of bicycle and pedestrian pathways along Lower River Road. The completed project will connect downtown Vancouver to the Flushing Channel at Vancouver Lake. The port says it will build other segments to coincide with development of its western properties such as Columbia Gateway, or as it obtains additional grant fund
