NEW YORK (AP) — Yankees infielder Jayson Nix has broken his left hand, the result of being hit by a pitch from Toronto’s R.A. Dickey.

Nix was hit by a pitch from the knuckleballer in the second inning Wednesday night. He went to first base and stayed for one pitch before leaving. Mark Reynolds pinch ran.

Nix has filled in nicely for the Yankees through a season beset by injuries, including to All-Stars Derek Jeter, Alex Rodriguez and Mark Teixeira. He was making his 32nd start this season at third base and has started 41 times at shortstop.

Nix hit a tying homer in the seventh and a walk-off single in the ninth Tuesday in the second game of a doubleheader sweep.

He’s hitting .236 with three homers and 24 RBIs.
