Letter: Stewart shouldn’t overstep bounds

This is in response to the story about the criminal charge filed against Steve Herman, and Councilor Jeanne Stewart’s concern that someone without a criminal record should find himself in trouble (“Alliance tightens as Madore rambles,” Aug. 18).

Stewart is running to retain her seat on city council; someone needs to explain to her that the Vancouver City Council has no authority to hear court cases, let alone dismiss charges. It’s apparent that Jeanne Stewart is unaware of what she was talking about. While she is mercilessly investigating this issue, perhaps she should investigate how much authority the city council has over criminal issues and, by the way, my husband has a few speeding tickets that he would like her to fix.
