PARIS (AP) — David Ward will run for president of the governing body of motorsports this year.
Ward says he will challenge President Jean Todt in the Dec. 2-6 election in Paris. Ward has resigned from his longstanding position as director general of the FIA foundation.
The 56-year-old Briton says in a statement that with the election period beginning in September, “it will be necessary for me to approach FIA members to secure nominations.” He intends to campaign aggressively, saying elections “inevitably involve robust and lively debate.”
Ward formerly was an aide to former FIA President Max Mosley and worked as an adviser to former Labour Party leader John Smith.
He is also the executive secretary of the independent Commission for Global Road Safety and represents FIA in the United Nations Road Safety Collaboration.
