Portland — Oregon State Police say a motorist died and a trooper suffered a minor wound during an exchange of gunfire Thursday afternoon on Interstate 84 east of The Dalles.

Lt. Gregg Hastings said the motorist died at the scene. The trooper was being treated at a hospital in The Dalles.

According to Hastings, the gunshots were exchanged after the motorist got out of his vehicle during a traffic stop. The suspect then got back into the vehicle and drove about a half-mile east before stopping.

The motorist was seriously injured when troopers approached. Hastings says attempts to revive the man failed.

The names of the trooper and the motorist have not been released.

Hastings says an investigation is continuing.
