BROOKLYN, N.Y. (AP) — Gerrell Martin scored 16 points, including the game-winning layup in the final seconds, to lift LIU Brooklyn to a 74-72 comeback victory over Norfolk State on Sunday.
The Blackbirds (2-4) trailed by six points with barely two minutes remaining in the game, but tied it up at 72 with an 8-2 run sparked by a pair of E.J. Reed free throws followed immediately by a 3-pointer by Troy Joseph. In the final seconds, LIU Brooklyn blocked a Norfolk State jumper, got the rebound and shoveled the ball to Martin for the win.
Jason Brickman, who scored 10 points for the Blackbirds, finished with a season-high 14 assists, including the setup that won the game.
The Spartans (5-3) kept the game close and took a 36-34 advantage into the break but couldn’t stop the LIU Brooklyn rally. Malcolm Hawkins led Norfolk State with 21 points and seven rebounds.
