JONESBORO, Ark. (AP) — Kendrick Washington had 16 points, eight rebounds and six assists on Monday night as Arkansas State beat Niagara 86-61 in the first meeting between the two schools.

Arkansas State (5-2) jumped ahead 19-7 to start the game and held a 45-26 advantage at halftime.

Brandon Reed was 3 of 4 from 3-point range and had 15 points while Raeford Worsham chipped in 14 points for Arkansas State. Melvin Johnson III added a game-high 10 rebounds.

The Red Wolves never trailed and used tough half-court defense to hold Niagara to just 31.7 percent shooting from the floor. The Red Wolves were especially stingy with the nation’s leading scorer, Antoine Mason (31.6 ppg). Mason had only 20 points on 6-of-17 shooting and also had six turnovers.

Niagara (1-7) had 18 turnovers overall and Marvin Jordan added 14 points for the Purple Eagles.
