Medford bomb case moves to federal court

MEDFORD, Ore. — The man accused of bombing the Jackson County District Attorney’s Office will be tried in federal court.

The office announced Monday that the state indictment against Alan Leroy McVay has been dismissed.

The Mail Tribune reports dropping the state case resolves the potential conflict of interest, since the DA’s office was the target.

Federal prosecutors have charged McVay in U.S. District Court with malicious destruction of property by explosion.

The 46-year-old is accused of taping a small pipe bomb to a propane tank and throwing it in the window of the DA’s office in Medford before dawn Nov. 13. The bomb broke windows but the propane tank did not explode.

Investigators say McVay set off the blast to postpone his sentencing the next day on burglary conviction.
