A Vancouver woman was airlifted off Mount St. Helens on Thursday after falling into a snow cave late Wednesday night.

Alana McCammon, 28, was reportedly injured near Monitor Ridge, according to the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office. She was listed in satisfactory condition at PeaceHealth Southwest Medical Center.

Her father, Chuck McCammon, said that she had leg injuries, including a broken tibia, and frostnip on her toes, but will not need surgery.

Emergency personnel received a 911 call about 8:45 p.m. Wednesday from a call box on the Climbers’ Bivouac trailhead.

Alana McCammon was accompanied by her boyfriend, Kyle Knight, 25, of Petersburg, Alaska. They were both wearing down jackets and carrying plenty of survival gear, Chuck McCammon said.

Crews from North Country EMS, the Volcano Rescue Team and the Skamania County Sheriff’s Office took 2 1/2 hours to reach McCammon.

At daylight, a helicopter airlifted McCammon from the mountainside to the command post where she was transported to the hospital.
