The Portland Winterhawks staged a big third period comeback before falling 5-4 in Edmonton on Friday in a rematch of the last two WHL Championship series.

Trailing 4-2, a Taylor Leier power play goal at the 17:13 mark to bring Portland within a goal.

With under a minute to go and Portland goaltender Brendan Burke on the bench for an extra attacker, Leier struck again and tied the game at 4-4 to force overtime.

After neither team could net the winner in the extra frame, the game went to a shootout. Each team scored once in the first three rounds, Mitch Moroz for Edmonton and Nic Petan for Portland. In the fourth round, the Oil Kings’ Reid Petryk netted the winner.
