Talking Points: 24 belongs to Griffey

What’s the buzz from the world of sports? Here are some items that will have people talking:

1

Seattle Times reporter Ryan Divish posted Friday that many people asked if Robinson Cano will have to change numbers once he signs with the Mariners. Cano wore No. 24 for the Yankees.

But there was this guy named Griffey that wore 24 in Seattle and no player has worn it since.

Griffey, who was in Tucson told Divish he couldn’t answer that.

It’s highly unlikely that would happen. Think about it this way, the Mariners signed certain hall of famer Rickey Henderson in 2000 as a free agent. Henderson wore No. 24 all his career. But when he came to Seattle he wore No. 25.

Paired with Washington’s hiring of Chris Petersen, the Cano signing produced one of the more dramatic Seattle sports days in recent years.

Larry Stone of the Seattle Times writes: “The hiring of Chris Petersen as Huskies’ coach, and the pending signing of Robinson Cano by the Mariners to a staggering 10-year, $240-million deal, would each be blockbuster stories in isolation.

“Combine them, and you have a double-barreled blast of mind-blowing developments, stories that could change the course of two teams.”

Here’s something you don’t see every day. A protest of a ruling was actually granted.

The NBA Development League has granted a protest filed by Fort Wayne, which called timeout with 0.9 seconds left and the game against the Texas Legends tied at 99. An official scoring error led them to believe they had a timeout left, the Legends were awarded a free throw that Chris Douglas-Roberts made.

It was the second protest granted by the NBA D-League in its 13-year history. The date and location of the conclusion will be determined later.
