WASHINGTON (AP) — Outfielder Nate McLouth has passed his physical and signed his two-year contract with the Washington Nationals.
The Nationals on Thursday announced the signing of McLouth, who is part of general manager Mike Rizzo’s offseason plan to strengthen the bench.
McLouth was a starter with the Baltimore Orioles this year, but in Washington he’ll be the spare outfielder expected to fill in when Bryce Harper, Jayson Werth or Denard Span is injured or takes a day off.
The 32-year-old McLouth has played nine seasons in the majors with Pittsburgh, Atlanta and the Orioles, and was an All-Star and Gold Glove winner in 2008. He hit .258 with 12 home runs and 36 RBIs this year.
To make room on the 40-man roster, the Nationals designated outfielder Corey Brown for assignment.
