Though the Longshore union won its battle for disputed work at the Port of Portland, its leaders caution it will take more to retain the port’s biggest container carrier.
Hanjin Shipping has 78 percent of the port’s container business. It has announced it will stop visiting Portland in January because the jobs dispute hurt productivity, and increased service charges at the port’s Terminal 6 hurt the bottom line.
ILWU Coast Committeeman Leal Sundet says the union is pleased to have the jobs involving refrigerated shipping containers, in a deal announced Thursday. But he says Hanjin won’t stay unless it gets a fair agreement with ICTSI Oregon, the terminal operator.
Many Oregon businesses use Terminal 6. Their costs will increase if cargo must be trucked to or from Puget Sound.
