In this season of giving I, again, find myself questioning my government as self-proclaimed saviors of mankind. Am I a better person for feeling that my government says “I must” or better because my soul tells me “I should.” One requires me to be my brother’s keeper. The other makes me choose to keep my brother, and, therefore, makes me a better person for choosing to be one with my brother, rather than being required. When we choose to do the right thing we are elevated in spirit. When we are required to do the right thing, we are resentful and don’t feel the reward of making correct choices. This is why many feel resentment of our government.
So, when you see that person at the stop with a sign, offer a sandwich. When you see that dented old car with two kids in the back and pumping only $2, step up and put your card in the slot and fill the tank. When you hear those bells being rung by the red pots, pull out some coin. Not because you “must,” but because you “should.” It will be up to you alone, and your spirit will soar. Both the giver and the receiver will be better off because you made the choice.
