Letter: Activity suggested risks safety

Robert J. Buker’s Dec. 18 letter “Too much relies on guessing game” suggesting that one put dry ice in a sealed jar should have been followed by “Do not try this at home.” The pressure buildup could cause the glass to explode. Further, the letter represents a simple-minded understanding of the science surrounding the increase of atmospheric carbon dioxide. I invite the writer to go have a talk with the oystermen to be enlightened by the real problems they face because of ocean acidification.

As an associate professor of molecular biosciences, my views expressed here are of my own and not that of Washington State University.
