Letter: We, as a nation, overslept

Rodger Stevens’ insightful Dec. 14 letter “Adjust policy on tax cuts for wealthy” ends with a book recommendation, “Rebooting the American Dream.” Before we reboot the dream we must first wake ourselves from the dream state we fell into some 40 years ago.

Our huge economic success following World War II was similar to gorging one’s self at a holiday banquet. Once we were full, many of us decided that a nice long nap was in order. After all, we were on top of the world with no challengers in sight.

The problem is we have never quite woken up. We still dream that other countries can’t compete with our economic system. That a high school education would get you a good-paying job. That politicians we elect wouldn’t lie and put self before public interest. That corporations had a heart.

We must finally accept the fact that we have not been paying attention and only personal effort is capable of saving us from ourselves.

There is another dream. That all believers will soon be whisked up to heaven and all this earthly mess will be conveniently left behind. Good luck with this one, it’s an all-in gamble that smacks of the “easy way out.” Unfortunately, many have become willing to take this option.
