PORTLAND — Portland police arrested a 44-year-old man accused of shooting another man during a dispute over allegedly stolen Christmas gifts.

Sgt. Pete Simpson says Martin Luther Hartley was jailed on charges of attempted murder, assault, unlawful use of a weapon and being a felon in possession of a firearm.

Police learned of the shooting late Saturday, when a 31-year-old man went to the hospital with a wound not considered life-threatening.

Simpson says the man was driven to the hospital in a stolen pickup, and the man’s girlfriend was charged with unlawful use of a motor vehicle.

Police have yet to specify the quantity and quality of the presents at the heart of the dispute. Nor have they elaborated on the circumstances behind the theft accusation. Simpson says the men were acquainted.
