Aberdeen — The Juno, a 131-foot fish-processing vessel, erupted into flames early Saturday morning, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Katelyn Tyson.

“The master of the vessel was aboard and was not hurt. He was off the vessel when the (Westport Fire Department) got there,” Tyson said.

The cause of the fire is still under investigation, Tyson said. The fire was contained to the vessel and no one was injured, she added. The Juno is moored at the Ocean Gold Ice House and was apparently not damaged, Tyson said.

Westport Fire informed the Coast Guard that the fire began at 1:30 a.m.

Two 47-foot motor life boats from the Grays Harbor Coast Guard station helped fight the blaze until 4:05 a.m. “Heat was still coming off the vessel,” Tyson added. The Coast Guard also dispatched an incident management team from the Columbia River sector in Astoria.

At first light, the Coast Guard determined that some 5,000 gallons of water from the fire fight was causing the boat to list and should be removed.

The Coast Guard will reassess the situation today and plan how to remove the fuel on board the Juno, Tyson said.
