Hampton beats Winthrop in 2 OT’s 101-95

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) — DuVaughn Maxwell scored 20 as Hampton beat Winthrop in double overtime, 101-95, in a non-conference game on Sunday.

Hampton (6-7, 2-0, Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) was up 37-32 at the break but Winthrop (6-5) stole the lead at 51-49 in the second_the first of several lead changes. Hampton later forced a crucial turnover and Deron Powers hit two free throws and a layup in the final seconds to send the game into OT tied at 76.

The first overtime ended with the score knotted at 86 when Keon Johnson scored for Winthrop on a layup with 3 seconds left. Hampton took over in the second overtime following a Ramon Mercado 3-pointer to go up 91-89. Powers and Mercado closed it out going 4-of-4 from the penalty line in the final 11 seconds to score the win.

Johnson tallied 24 points and Keon Moore scored 22 for Winthrop in the losing effort.
