A woman gave birth Saturday in the Snohomish County Jail.
Snohomish County sheriff’s spokeswoman Shari Ireton says jail staff believe the baby was born prematurely. A medical team was called when the woman went into labor but the baby was born before it arrived.
Firefighters took the woman and baby to a hospital.
The Daily Herald reported the 26-year-old Lake Stevens woman was jailed Jan. 28 on accusations out of Edmonds of forgery, possession of a controlled substance and possession of stolen mail.
The woman is back in jail, and the baby is under the care of the state Department of Social and Health Services.
