MINNEAPOLIS (AP) — It wasn’t too long ago that Glen Perkins appeared to be on the outs with the Minnesota Twins.

The hometown boy clashed with the organization and was struggling with injuries that threatened to derail his career in Minnesota. Flash forward a few years later and Perkins is the rock on which the rest of the pitching staff rests.

He will turn 30 in March and he enters the season as the team’s unquestioned closer and a valued voice in the clubhouse. He begins the second season of a four-year contract that will pay him more now that he’s assumed the closer’s role.

Twins pitchers and catchers reported to camp in Fort Myers, Fla., on Tuesday and will hold their first official workout on Wednesday.
