CHAPEL HILL, N.C. (AP) — North Carolina coach Roy Williams says freshman Joel James won’t play at second-ranked Duke on Wednesday night due to a concussion.

Williams said Tuesday that the 6-foot-10, 260-pound center took a blow to the head at some point during last week’s home win against Wake Forest, though it’s unclear when he was hurt. James played 9 minutes and went scoreless in the weekend loss at Miami, but team spokesman Matt Bowers said James didn’t notify team medical staff that he was having headaches after the Wake Forest game until Monday.

Williams said James didn’t practice Monday and wouldn’t practice Tuesday.

James is averaging 2.7 points and 2.9 rebounds in about 11 minutes per game for the Tar Heels (16-7, 6-4 Atlantic Coast Conference).
