Letter: Small steps to a bigger impact

Kudos to Rep. Jamie Herrera Beutler, R-Camas, for introducing her “Savings Starts With Us” Act, which will reduce the salaries of Congress the president and vice president by 10 percent.

While it is hardly even a drop in the bucket as far as reducing the national debt, it would at least demonstrate good faith on the part of all those affected that they truly are interested in reducing spending.

Now let’s take it a step further and eliminate life-time salaries, retirement and health benefits for former members of Congress.

Give them a one-year severance package in order to let them get re-established in the private sector and then stop it all.

That might at least be a couple of drops in the bucket.
