Ryan gets 27, Oliver 17 as Campbell tops VMI 87-78

BUIES CREEK, N.C. (AP) — Andrew Ryan came off the bench to score a career-high 27 points Saturday to lead Virginia Military Institute to an 87-78 victory over Campbell in Big South Conference play.

The Camels (11-16, 6-7), who lost 76-57 at VMI on Jan. 16, led virtually throughout while getting double-figure scoring from four others. Antwon Oliver scored a career-high 17 points, Reco McCarter added 14, Darian Hooker had 11 and Trey Freeman posted a double-double with 10 points and a career-best 14 assists.

With the score tied 10-10, Campbell went on a 19-4 run and led 40-30 at halftime. The Keydets (11-13, 6-6) cut the lead to 63-57 but got no closer.

D.J. Covington led VMI with a double-double. He scored a career-high 31 points on 14 of 20 shooting, and his 15 rebounds tied his career best.

The Keydets shot 18.8 percent on 3-pointers (6 of 32). Campbell’s bench outscored VMI’s 60-18.
