American U edges Holy Cross 64-61 on Munoz’s shot

WASHINGTON (AP) — Daniel Munoz’s 3-pointer with 1 second remaining in overtime gave American University a 64-61 victory over Holy Cross in a Patriot League game Sunday.

Munoz scored eight of his 14 points in overtime. The Eagles (10-15, 5-5) led 61-59 after Stephen Lumpkins’ three-point play with 50 seconds left, but Dave Dudzinski’s layup for the Crusaders (11-14, 3-7) tied it with 35 seconds left.

Cullen Hamilton’s missed free throw for Holy Cross with 5 seconds remaining was rebounded by the Eagles.

American took the game’s largest lead, 45-37, with 11:53 left in regulation on John Schoof’s 3-pointer, but Holy Cross responded with nine straight points for a 46-45 lead. Phil Beans hit a layup and a 3-pointer, followed by layups from Malcolm Miller and Dudzinski.

Lumpkins led American with 17 points and 12 rebounds, and Schoof scored 15 points.

Dudzinski had 19 points and Justin Burrell nine assists for the Crusaders.
