No. 16 South Carolina women stop Mississippi 62-47

OXFORD, Miss. (AP) — Ashley Bruner had 15 points and 13 rebounds, and No. 16 South Carolina rediscovered its defense in a 62-47 Southeastern Conference victory over Mississippi on Sunday.

The Gamecocks (21-5, 9-4) rank fourth in the nation in scoring defense, holding opponents to 49.0 points per game, but were beaten 78-74 by No. 9 Kentucky on Thursday night.

They held the Rebels (9-16, 2-10) to 31.4-percent shooting (16 of 51), including just 21.4 percent (6 of 28) in the first half, when South Carolina took a 29-15 lead.

Tiffany Mitchell, coming off the bench for the first time this season, scored 13 of her 15 points for South Carolina in the opening half.

Ole Miss started the second half with a 10-2 run in the first 90 seconds to pull within 31-25, but the Gamecocks responded with a 9-0 run.

Valencia McFarland scored 16 points and Tia Faleru 14 for Mississippi.
