Hawkins, Norfolk State beat Hampton 62-59

HAMPTON, Va. (AP) -- Malcolm Hawkins scored 18 points and Norfolk State evaded disaster, holding off Hampton for its 11th straight victory 62-59 Monday night.

The Spartans (17-10, 12-0 Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference) led 59-47 with 7:08 remaining, but missed their next seven shots and failed to score for just shy of 6 minutes. The Pirates (10-14, 7-4) ran off 11 straight points, pulling within 59-58 on Du'Vaughn Maxwell's jumper with 2:47 left.

Pendarvis Williams' free throw ended Norfolk State's drought with 1:15 left, and after Hampton's Deron Powers hit a free throw, Hawkins made a layup for the three-point edge and the Pirates missed their last three shots.

The Spartans' winning streak is their longest since winning 14 straight in 1994-95, and their conference mark is their best since beginning 14-0 in Central Intercollegiate Athletic Association play in 1989-90.

Maxwell had 12 points and 10 rebounds for Hampton, which had won five straight.
