Vermont’s late surge beats Maine 73-61

BURLINGTON, Vt. (AP) — Brian Voelkel had 16 rebounds and 10 assists, and Sandro Carissimo’s 16 points led four Vermont players in double figures as the Catamounts pulled away late to beat Maine 73-61 Wednesday night.

Vermont (17-9, 10-4 America East Conference) led 37-28 early in the second half, but the Black Bears ran off 11 points in the next 2:37 to lead 39-37.

Maine (11-16, 6-8), which defeated Vermont 71-68 on Jan. 22, built an eight-point lead, but the Catamounts went back in front, 60-56 with 5:20 left, after a 13-1 burst. They outscored Maine 13-5 the rest of the way.

Clancy Rugg scored 14 points, Luke Apfeld 13 and Brendan Kilpatrick 12 for Vermont, which made 23 of 26 free throws (88.5 percent) to Maine’s 10 of 13.

Zarko Valjarevic, the conference Player of the Week, led the Black Bears with 14 points. Alasdair Fraser had 11 points and eight rebounds.
